Digital Story 2 Narrative

Do you know what a cultural festival is? Perhaps you celebrate one, or know about some. A cultural festival is a festival that celebrates culture or an event in a particular culture. There are plenty of cultural festivals that take place in countries all over the world. It's fun to learn about them and even find ways to participate sometimes. Perhaps you'd like to hear of some of the major festivals around the world. Let's start with something you've probably all heard of, Oktoberfest. Yeah, I know, you're probably thinking "Oh, isn't that that big party they have in Germany where all those German guys get drunk", but then you'd be wrong… or rather... half right. Oktoberfest is celebrated all over Germany, but where the party really gets down is Munich, Germany. The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to honor the marriage between Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. All the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate in front of the city. Originally the main event of Oktoberfest was a horse race, but as the annual celebration grew it became more elaborate every year. From potato sack racing to eating contests, then eventually mechanical rides. When beer was eventually allowed into the city, beer carts became a big hit and eventually had grown into entire establishments called beer halls. Oktoberfest is traditionally held on the first Sunday in October, and is sometimes extended or even cancelled depending on the conditions in Munich. People flock to the streets to watch the parade and hear both classic German music and even modern American music. Oktoberfest is a time to kick back and enjoy life, with all kinds of music, foods, and games. Alright, now it's time to get a little bit more colorful. Let's talk about Holi, "The Festival of Colors"! Holi is celebrated in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and countries with large Indic populations. It is primarily celebrated by Hindus, but during Holi anyone can join the fun. Holi is a time to break the caste barrier, and celebrate together the Hindu religion. This is what Holi looks like (see picture). Now you're wondering "Why does everyone look like they just came out of a big bag of skittles?" and I'll answer "That's pretty much the main attraction of the Holi festival." During Holi people buy bags of colorful sands and throw them on each other, this keeps to the Legend of Lord Krishna and Radha. In Holi it is perfectly okay to throw colored sand at your elders or parents (everyone's allowed to join the fun). A common phrase used during Holi is "Bura na mano, Holi Hai!”. This is Hindi for "Don't mind, it's Holi!". Now let's talk about a rather less flirtatious celebration Called Carnival in Brazil, now it may not look less flirtatious but I assure you it is. During Carnival people are not to be flirtatious with anyone, its part of Carnival's Catholic tradition. Carnival originates from a portugese pre-lent festivity called "entrudo". The main attraction of this festival would be it's many floats and most of all, Samba music (This was adopted from Black Brazilians from Bahia). This last one is a tad bit different from the others. This festival celebrates the coming of spring. It's Hanamatsuri!!! Hanamatsuri is celebrated all over Japan. During Hanamatsuri people flock to the cherry blossom trees to watch the flowers bloom. Often people will dress in traditional attire and go to the temple to pray. So, now that you know about a few festivals from around the world, aren't you excited?!! I know I am! I hope that seeing this has made you curious, and that you will perhaps research the many holidays not mentioned here. There are many holidays all over the world just waiting for your attention. So, go out there and check 'em out!!!

Agenda:
 Based on the Digital Story Rubric and the CSI Graduate Portfolio I believe I did only satisfy the goal of this project. According to the CSI Graduate Portfolio, I feel my project is culturally aware, literarte for the twenty first century, socially prepared and culturally sensitive. Although, it isn't really that great in my opinion. I never got to input a voice narration or music for that matter and my transition in topics was terrible. I am honestly not pleased at all with my work, and wish I could've don better. I was honestly really excited about this project until I figured it wouldn't turn out as I had hoped.

What sounds do you hear when thinking about this story? I hear chanting and all kinds of classic cultural music from india. I can hear children laughing while stuffing their faces full of delicious and diverse foods all over. I hear Germans at the beer hall laughing together and making cheers to this joyous occasion. I hear drums and samba music from brazil. I can hear the excitement in the air as people scream and cheer their hearts out, screaming in the streets about the parade. I hear the bagpipes, the trumpets, the tubas. I hear water sprinkling and spraying in the streets of Nepal.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
What questions will be raised by your story? Or, what traditions will be documented? Well, I suppose that the questions risen will probably be " What other festivals are out there"? (since I can't name every one). The traditions will be made well documented in the minds of the people who see my story. They may just begin to respect other cultures more and realize that they're not the only ones on this earth.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Why will this story be interesting to others? This story will give answers to the questions in peoples heads (the ones they're to prideful ask). It will show them fun things that happen in other countries.

1) What is your Topic: Cultural Festivals
 
 
2) What is the time period of story: Modern day
 
 
3)List the major points, facts, events, people, and/or ideas of your story: The Major ideas are to expose people outside of this experience to cultural festivals and show them part of a culture that is not their own (so they can learn to respect outside cultures).
 
 
 
 
4)Why do you feel this story is important to tell? Hmmm, well...I guess it's a redeeming thing really. I strongly dislike when people call me a loser just because I respect culture. So...I guess I want to show them that there's a good reason to respect it so that they can understand and stop judging cultures that are not their own.
 
 
 
 
5) What are some challenges of telling this story? (hard to find information, personal, etc) Well, the most difficult thing to do would be to explore the cultures myself. I respect and admire all cultures, but Japanese culture is really the only one that I've been extremely exposed to. So, to do this I have to expose myself to a lot more cultures (Which I'm really excited about doing) ^o^
 
 


 
6) List some images that come to mind when you think about this story? Well, for starters, I'll have to get pictures of the geography of certain areas that are going to be mentioned in my story. I'd also have to get pictures of the things most important to that culture or things crucial to their cultural gatherings (Ex. Religious symbols, lanterns, cultural attire, balloons,  food). After that, I would like to get footage of actual festivals in progress (and i'll explain what goes on during the festivals and what the purpose is).




7) How does your project relate to our CSI Graduate Portfolio? I believe that this project relates to all aspects of the graduate profile, whether it be cultural or otherwise. It proves my exposure to the outside world, and my knowledge of it as well. It shows my ability to use technology in order to make a point in society, and that I'm willing to cange he minds of others for the better. It really just shows that being in CSI has made me more aware of who I am and who I want to be.
